Dr. Thompson is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine and has more than 30 years of clinical experience in emergency medicine, including extensive leadership roles within emergency departments and large emergency medicine physician groups. He has advanced the field of telehealth by contributing to the development of symptom checkers, health bots, consumer engagement tools, natural language processing systems, and telehealth applications. His work has focused on improving access, consistency, and quality in remote clinical decision support.

Dr. Thompson graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in General Engineering, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois in Chicago, and a dual residency in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Thompson’s professional career includes over two decades of experience in clinical informatics. He has led the creation of databases and educational tools designed to support quality improvement initiatives for medical call centers and emergency departments. He has directed large-scale benchmarking efforts, aggregating and analyzing data from more than 6.5 million telehealth triage calls to improve operational performance and clinical outcomes. He has served as chair and/or member of hospital-based and national quality assurance committees, contributing to standards in patient safety, quality improvement, and clinical performance evaluation.

Dr. Thompson previously served as the Chief Medical Information Officer for ECI Healthcare Partners, where he provided strategic leadership in technology, medical coding, regulatory compliance, and clinician education. He also was the founder and CEO of Health Navigator.

Dr. Thompson leads the creation and strategic oversight of clinical adult telehealth triage guidelines utilized across telehealth platforms, call centers, and electronic health records in North America.
